MB&F HM4 Thunderbolt Watch Hands On
This is man, MB&F's latest and greatest watch. Hands-on with Clockwork Mechanism No. 4 – Thunderbolt. What a nifty little machine this is. Well, just "small" in the scheme of things, it's not exactly shy on the wrist. But that's okay, I like my bold statements, and this watch is of course thick. Unlike other MB&F watches, the aviation-themed HM4 has a more steampunk feel than their other watches. Not that it's steampunk in theme, but it has the appearance of two large gauges and "pods". The watch is made of titanium and is very lightweight. That much steel would weigh a lot. Dress wise, it's actually quite comfortable. I could easily wear this watch all day - just don't forget to be careful. Max Busser, founder of MB&F, commented that the HM4 is the most legible MB&F watch to date. He was actually quite right. It is the only horological machine with a traditional looking dial. Round and clear, the Arabic numerals and luminous hands are very easy to read, especially given its orientation on the wrist. I really enjoy looking at this watch. Next to the time is the pod with the movement's power reserve indicator. To make winding super smooth, MB&F added an extra gear to the train. While winding is smoother, you do need to spend more time winding the watch to keep it wound. This isn't actually scary, since people who wear hand-wound watches tend to like to fiddle with the crown nervously and wind it up regularly. The watch has two crowns, one behind each crown. The crown behind the power reserve indicator box is used for winding, while the other crown is used to adjust the time. Thankfully, reading the time is just as easy as operating the movement.
While most cases feel more like blocks of metal, the MH4 is a more open-skeleton design. One of the main functions of the case is to provide a view into the movement. In addition to the transparent sapphire crystal on the case, MB&F designed the watch so that the movement can be viewed from all angles. You can't help but immediately notice the large sapphire crystal piece in the middle of the pod section. Such large areas of sapphire are extremely difficult to manufacture and cost more than many types of homemade mechanical movements. MB&F sources this exotic sapphire crystal from one of the world's suppliers. It may have been a painful affair for them, but the results speak for themselves. The HM4 engine doesn't have a tourbillon, but you can see the escape wheel in motion through a sapphire window at the top of the watch - which creates a wonderful perpetual motion feel. The HM4 is an amazing device. Not only does it work extremely well, but you get the wonderful feeling of joining a special club of watch enthusiasts just by wearing the watch.
The aviator-inspired calfskin strap is black and custom made for MB&F. It really completes the theme of the watch that started with the A-10 aircraft. The finish of the case is a combination of polished and satin-finished sections. It can be seen that polishing is very difficult. MB&F told me that their case finishers would laugh at them when they said they were going to put a satin finish on the case. This has to do with the tiny spaces that need to be polished and the size of the satin finishing brush. Somehow being able to get it done, I have a feeling they'll continue to perfect the process. It's good to know that this watch is not just some limited edition, but a new addition to MB&F's timepiece collection.
While my ability to afford this or any other MB&F watch may never come true, I fully believe in the concept. Appreciation for MB&F is turning into a way of life, and a love of their products. Already with the notion of the "MB&F man" (that is, the man who trusts enough in his own taste without demanding approval from others), most other avant-garde luxury watches are immediately compared to MB&F's offerings. Does MB&F really care that they are set to the high standard of weird mechanical watches? Not particularly - although they are flattered by the title and position.
